One such event that did have an impact on business was when oil refineries began operating in nearby Anadarko and started using oil from local wells as fuel instead of coal; this caused prices for gasoline to skyrocket which impacted local businesses negatively but did not much affect overall economic development outside of Williston itself On November 3rd 1959 North Dakota's popular "Dinner at Rideau Hall" attracted more than 20 000 people to downtown Ottawa for an official dinner hosted by Prime Minister John Aird while he resided at Rideau Hall between tours throughout Canada

The town experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century, but declined beginning in World War I due to technological advances that made manufacturing more difficult. In 1925, however, Williston regained its former prosperity through several waves of immigrants who arrived during the Great Migration to North Dakota after being discharged from military service or finding work elsewhere in America during World War I
