A post office called "Westerly" was established in 1878, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1886, a group of Danish immigrants founded a small Village near present day Eastside Drive and Harrison Avenue; it became known as "Danish Settlement." In 1907, a group of Dutch farmers organized to purchase 640 acres (246 ha) around what is now downtown West Fargo from the Sioux Nation for $5 million. This donation made possible the founding of the University of North Dakota campus on what are now Banks and First Streets north of Hudson Avenue. In 1925, developer Harry Sorenson donated 320 acres (120 ha) to form an incorporated town named "West Fargo". The name honors his father's pioneer ancestry which included holdings in what is now North Dakota and Minnesota. The townsite began developing rapidly due to its location within easy access to Interstate 94 and other economic opportunities during the late 1920s and early 1930s; development continued into the 1940s when mile-long arterial streets were built parallel to Interstate 94 throughout much of town center area - making West Fargo one of largest planned communities ever attempted in central ND. A large fire destroyed most buildings on May 7th 1951 when some 50000 people were living or working within 5 blocks radius centered on Main Street/I-94 exit #175A about 1 mile southwest from current day Bank Center plaza east side from US Highway 2E
