West Fargo, North Dakota is a small town located in Cass County, Minnesota. It is the county seat of Cass County and has a population of approximately 7,000. The land that makes up West Fargo was first settled by European Americans in the early 1800s. The community was founded on the site of what is now the Walmart Supercenter. The center had its grand opening in 1984 and it has since become an anchor for the community. The history of West Fargo dates back to 1859 when settlers arrived in what is now Cass County. At that time, the area was part of Dakota Territory and was known as "Hennepin Agency." By 1871, however, local farmers had formed a village called "West Fargo" on the banks of Creek River. That same year saw the founding of the First Methodist Episcopal Church at what is now Main Street. A few years later, another church was built at Fourth Street and Broadway which served as both churches until 1951 when they were moved to their current location on Elm Street. In 1952-1953 work began on developing what would eventually become Walmart Supercenter on Elm Street in West Fargo. That project resulted in significant development for West Fargo and its residents who soon became proud members of their community institution. From that point forward, Walton family ownership - through Walmart - shaped West Fargo into one of America's most vibrant shopping communities thanks to its abundant variety of stores and convenient locations across North Dakota and Manitoba Canada
