The history of firearms in West Fargo, North Dakota goes back to at least 1881. The first firearms were shotguns and rifles used by the farmers and ranchers in the area. By 1907, the West Fargo Rifle Club had been organized and began using handguns for target practice. In 1923, a shotgun range was opened by J.W. Weiske and it would be run until his death in 1984. The rifle range continued to be open until 1957 when it closed due to lack of patronage. In 1961, a handgun range was opened by Denny Aerts with assistance from Bob Ladd of Fargo who later became president of the NRA in 1992. The handgun range operated until 1982 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1978, a revolver training school was started by Alonzo Herrington with help from Ron Koppelman and Gene Wiegandt of Fargo which would operate until 1988 when it also closed due to financial problems. “Firearm Clothing History in West Fargo” is an article I wrote for my class on “Gun Culture: An Introduction” at North Dakota State University-Fargo campus in Fall 2009 semester(s). This paper is based upon interviews with individuals who have knowledge or experience about firearm clothing history in the community of West Fargo, ND specifically between 1881-1983 inclusive(s). Although not exhaustive or comprehensive, this essay provides an insight into firearm clothing history within the confines of one small town located along Interstate 94 corridor eastward from Grand Forks, ND., during that time period(s).

West Fargo is a city in Bottineau County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Bottineau County and one of its two cities. West Fargo is bordered by Bottineau County on the east and north, Dickinson to the south, and Cannon Ball to the west. The first settler in what would become West Fargo was James White in 1868. He founded a log cabin near what is now downtown West Fargo on the railroad Tracks of Northern Pacific. The town site was surveyed in 1865 by John Fenton and named for President Abraham Lincoln's old home state of Illinois. In 1898 eastern Minnesota farmer John Wirth established a homestead called Prairie du Chien about 4 miles northeast of present day West Fargo on State Highway 8I (now US 281). Wirth had come to this area during a time when railroads were just starting to be built through Manitoba and Iowa into rural America. After years of hard work he had managed to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) of land around his farmstead which he named Prairie du Chien Prairie City after himself and his family members who helped him build it up from scratch. In 1905 Wirth sold his property including all but 20 acres (8 km²) of present-day downtownWest Fargo to local ranchers Tom Olsen, C R Hagenauer, Clarence Olson for $10 per acre ($160/km²). This transaction created an important commercial center for what would become western North Dakota because farmers could bring their products downriver from Minneapolis or Sioux Falls so they could be sold directly to consumers in towns such as Aberdeen, Brookings or Rapid City. At that time there were no roads or telephone lines within watersheds like today’s Dakotas until well after World War II when Interstate 94 was constructed between Minneapolis and South Dakota cutting off most access points east of Rapid City socommerce along the Missouri River stopped entirely within those states except for those located between Sioux Falls and Rapid City where goods were transported by way of water routes overland

West Fargo, North Dakota is a town in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 692 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Missouri River and is the county seat of Cass County. The town was founded by men who came to the area from Illinois in 1871. West Fargo first appeared on maps in 1878 as "Fargo", but it changed its name to West Fargo in 1902 after becoming part of Cass County. The village of West Fargo was platted in 1907, and became a city in 1959. In 1941, during World War II, the United States government constructed Fort Randall near West Fargo as a military airfield for bombers and fighters used against Japan. The fort closed in 1945 and all buildings were destroyed except for one that still stands today - it is now called "Fort Randall Museum". In 1998, when North Dakota legalized medical marijuana,West Fargo began issuing licenses for cultivation and sales of medical cannabis products. As of 2018, West Fargo is one of only two US cities with legal dispensary operations; the other being Amsterdam, Netherlands.

However, development began to slowdown in the 1990s and 2000s due to concerns about environmental degradation and gentrification within the city limits. As of 2019, Fargo is still struggling to recover from its past economic problems.
