Minot is a city in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The population was 43,724 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in North Dakota. In 1889, Fargo organized as a city and named it for Lieutenant Colonel Henry Halleck Morton (1841–1921) general superintendent of Indian Affairs for Montana Territory during that territory's creation from parts of Dakotas Chariton and Nebraskas Lincoln counties Morton had been headmaster at Ft Laramie boarding school between 1881 and 1883 when he moved west to become superintendent general with jurisdiction over all Indian reservations east of Nebraska within territorial boundaries plus most western Montana Territory including present day North Dakota In 1902, Fargo annexed part of Hill City which lay south of downtown on both sides of US Highway 2 northbound from Interstate 90 while US Highway 2 remained routed eastward then southward through downtown Minneapolis before rejoining US Highway 2 southbound near today's intersection with I-90 northwest from downtown Fargo In 1912, Fargo annexes an additional part of Hill City lying northwest side between US highways 16 and 19 near today’s intersection with I-94 southwest from downtown Fargo On November 14th 1915 the two cities merged into one under the name “Fargo”

But despite the devastation wrought by World War II on North Dakota's local economies, Minot has continued to grow since then and is now one of the most populous cities in North Dakota with over 100,000 people living within its boundaries alone.
