In 1996, when Fargo and Minneapolis each lost their separate municipalities status under statehood proceedings, they were reincorporated back into Dickinson County as part of what became known as the metropolitan region. The current post office building opened on December 1, 1961. In 1916, Minot became one of two cities to be merged with Fargo into the new Fargo-Minton metropolitan area. In 1930, Minot's water tower was destroyed by an avalanche that swept through the town during a snowstorm. A new water tower was built shortly afterwards and still stands today. Mining began in earnest around 1900 and continued until World War II when it stopped completely due to lack of resources. Today, there are several small mines located within town limits as well as larger operations nearby such as Encana Resources and Energy Company which have brought new life to the economy since 1990s when oil production resumed nearmines nearby throughout much of rural North Dakota (although most production has now ceased).
In the summer of 1881, a group of men and boys from Minot, North Dakota, founded the town in an area that is now called the Woody Creek District. The first settler in Minot was John Upchurch.
