Laser sights have always been a part of the firearms world, but their origins lie in Minot, North Dakota. In 1971, Melvin Dickey and his team at the American Laser Sight Company developed the first laser sight for handguns. The device was called "The Dickey Sight". It consisted of a small light-emitting diode (LED) panel that was affixed to the barrel and used to provide illumination to shooters. This early design proved very successful and was quickly adopted by law enforcement agencies around the country. In 1984, American Laser Sight Company merged with another company called Alliant Techsystems Inc. This merger allowed for the development of more advanced lasersights which could be mounted on modern guns. This new sighting system became known as the "Alliant Tech3" and it remained popular until 1994 when it was replaced by the current model, the "USA Optics 3". For handguns these days it really doesn’t matter which kind of sighting system you choose since any combination will work just fine provided it can acquit itself in daylight conditions without fail!

Laser sights have been around for many years, but their origins can be traced back to the early days of pens and pencils. In 1885, a Chinese scientist named Liu Jieying developed a pen-like device that used a light beam to track paper on a surface (Figure 1). The first laser sighting system was created in 1966 by American physicist Theodore Kaczynski using an old military projector as his sight (Figure 2). However, this system was not successful and never saw wide use. In 1972, two American scientists named Gordon Bell and Ralph Merritt developed a laser sight called "Bell's Gunsight." This system featured an fixed lens with adjustable objective that allowed users to adjust the intensity of the light beam emitted from the projector (Figure 3). These new systems were much more accurate than predecessor devices and were used by soldiers in various wars including Vietnam. However, these systems also had some limitations such as being difficult to maintain and needing stationary support. In 1984, Japanese scientists Yukihide Sato and Shigeru Miyamoto designed what is considered to be the world’s first true laser-based sighting device – the Meitner gunsight (Figure 4), which was used in Japan’s World War II surrender ceremony. This system utilized three small lasers pointed at different parts of an image on a screen to create precise aiming instructions for firearms fireers. It remains one of the most popular laser sights in use today. Since its inception, laser sighting technology has undergone numerous changes both design features and functionality. Some of these changes include: The introduction of variable power output capabilities; increased accuracy with better protection against straylight; addition of digital displays for user feedback; incorporation into existing firearms designs; use in sniper rifles for precision shooting; etc.
