MINOT, North Dakota is a small town in the United States. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dickinson County. MINOT stands on the banks of the Missouri River, about halfway between Sioux Falls and Rapid City. The current community began developing around 1880 when prospectors discovered gold and silver in what is now that county. In 1881, a post office was established at Minot and local merchants soon became involved in trading goods with miners along the Missouri River. By 1890, Minot had become a bustling commercial center with several hundred residents and two stores. A coal mine opened in 1904 and quickly became one of Fargo's most important industries; by 1910 it employed 648 people within seven miles of downtown. When World War I broke out in 1914,Minot experienced its first boom as war equipment production increased; this led to new construction projects such as an airfield and school buildings which still stand today. During World War II, Minot served as a staging area for troops moving upriver to battle in North Dakota's Battle of la Barge (1944). The following year saw another boom as munitions production increased during the Cold War; however, by 1960 Minot had largely fallen out of favor as Fargo's largest city due to advances in transportation and communication technology. In recent decades, though off-the-grid mining has resumed near town limits due to environmental concerns over nearby uranium mines – MINOT remains an unremarkable town surrounded by unremarkable countryside with few amenities save for two churches and some stores open until late at night
