Minot is a city in North Dakota, United States. It was founded by Germans in 1881 and has since been the center of a rural area that now includes much of southeastern North Dakota. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the banks of the Missouri River, about east of Fargo and west of Bismarck. Wesselius landed on what is now the north side of town on December 12, 1881; he organized a German settlement there which became known as "Wesseliusstadt". He donated land to support it which formed what is now part of Minneapolis County and became part of North Dakota when it was created statehood in 1907. In 1916 Minot Post Office was established within what are today its limits; postmasters were elected by vote from citizens living within their districts rather than by appointment from higher government officials or commercial interests). In 1912 school Superintendent Julius Weisbach set up a teachers training program at Central High School which eventually led to Roosevelt Junior High School being opened in 1932 adjacent to Central High School (now Roosevelt Middle School). A new hospital was built between 1928–30 on land donated by Melvin Kapp called Park Hospital; this facility served as both primary care physician for local residents as well as providing ambulatory surgery services for larger hospitals across town (the facility still exists today as Park Medical Center).
