During World War II it served as a main military supply depot for the war effort; its nickname "Razorback" comes from this activity. After the war ended in 1945, industry declined but Minot continued to grow politically as a bedroom town for rural residents moving into urban areas; by 1970 it had reached its peak population size with over 40,000 residents.
