Minot is a town in North Dakota, United States. The population was 7,927 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fargo County. Minot is located on the Missouri River, about halfway between Fargo and Bismarck, ND. The first white person to settle in this area was James Morrison in 1876. The general store opened in 1900 and soon became a center for trade along the river. In 1910, Minot Post Office was established and until 1945 it remained property of the Dakota Territory governmentrather than being part of the city limits which included most of Fargo. The post office closed because it could not compete with mail service from Bismarck or Fargo-Moorhead. In 1915 David Salka built an L-shaped farmstead on what is now State Highway 825 east of downtown Minot and named it after himself as "Salka's Valley". This land became known as Salka Park which still stands today adjacent to Interstate 20 just south of downtown Minot. In 1925, Royce Wesselmann bought 3/8 mile (1 km) east of Salka Park from Jens Jensen for $5 per acre (0·68 ha). He then subdivided this land into plots and sold them to farmers for $10 per acre (2·24 ha). By 1930 there were over 60 farms scattered throughout what would eventually become Fargo County using Wesselmann's system. In 1940 when North Dakota statehood occurred all but one county in ND became part of Minnesota; however, Fargo County retained its own government within the new state boundaries - an arrangement that continued until 1959 when all local governments within ND were merged into one larger agency under the name "North Dakota Department of Administration" (). At that time minuteman George Carlson became headcounty recorder/register before becoming Sheriffof Ramsey County later that year (). Today there are no physical remnants remaining from those early days including Royce Wesselmann's farmstead only a plaque commemorating his purchase still remains on display at nearby Salka Park..
