Minot is a town in North Dakota along the east bank of the Missouri River. The population was 5,593 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dickinson County. The first European settler in what became Minot was settlers from Illinois looking for land to farm near their centers of gravity in that region. The town's name came about when Mrs. Hargrave offered her home as a site for an agricultural school; she donated land to make that possible and designated "minot" as the school's name. In 1923, local banker John Prentice entered into an agreement with Northwestern Natural Gas Co., which would provide natural gas service to towns served by its pipeline, to build a plant at what is now downtown Minot; this plant would become one of America's largest gas stations ever constructed. In 1933, Minottis voted not to annex any neighboring towns because they felt that doing so would have been too much annexation without consent from all concerned residents - this policy continues today although some annexed municipalities have since rejoined the township proper (e.g., Spooner Heights). In 1938, construction began on what is now Interstate 29 south of town and quickly added hundreds of job opportunities during World War II providing munitions production jobs throughout North Dakota while also creating significant retail development including several large department stores as well as mills run by Northern Light Paper Company until it went out of business around 1990s amidst increased competition from Walmart store openings across America combined with fires starting accidentally inside brick kilns operated by locals beginning around 1920-21 which destroyed over 90% percent or all existing buildings within approximately 4 miles radius resulting in few if any services being rendered until these were finally restored following lawsuits filed against both businesses owners/constructors and government officials claiming environmental damage caused by firebombing raids conducted during that time period which again devastated many communities across America during this era dubbed "the Great Depression". The United States Military developed the M1 Abrams Tank which was heavily armoured enough to withstand attacks from Iraqi tanks while also able to fire heavy rounds capable of destroying large numbers of infantry targets at close range
