The history of Minot began with settlers who arrived during the first days of America’s colonization process. These men were hard working men who wanted to create a better life for themselves and their families. By 1840 there were over 100 residents living in what is now Minot. The early settlers were subsistence farmers who did not have much money so they had to find other ways to make money such as trading goods with Native Americans or getting involved in cattle drives that transported hides from animal herds across North Dakota Territory. By 1860 there were about 350 people living in what is now Minot when gold was discovered at Deadwood Gulch Racetrack on July 24th by prospectors led by James Wickersham (1819-1884). This event changed everything because it allowed miners from all over America to come down into North Dakota Territory looking for gold while also providing new opportunities for business owners east of the Missouri River who could now bring goods back upriver without having to go through Mexico or Canada. After Gold Rush came Independence which happened on November 3rd 1858 when American Indian Chief Big Foot surrendered his land south of present day Fargo to Ulysses S Grant after leading a successful campaign against Mexican forces under President James K Polk (1846-1912). Consequently , even though numerous articles have been written discussing matters related thereto – including one recently published book jacket flap announcing upcoming documentary film set shot entirely inside/inclusiveof MINOT historical district—none has ever provided evidence compellingly linking MINOT settlement/region thereto directly with major historic events occurring either upstream or downstream…thus frustrating attempts hitherto made by interested parties finally culminating herein!” Nevertheless notwithstanding this lacklustre start – remaining officials within our community are currently pursuing efforts actually linkages between aforementioned 🙂

The name "Minot" comes from a Sioux word meaning "place where buffalo Sleep." The first people to live in what is now Minot were the Mandan and Hidatsa. They had their villages here for several hundred years before they moved south into present-day Minnesota in 1851. A group of Canadian Mounties were assigned to patrol this area when they arrived, and they named the place after Lieutenant Colonel John C. Minot who had been commanding them at Fort Snelling in Manitoba at the time. In 1872, General Alfred P. Sloan ordered General Nelson Miles to march his army through this area and open up Dakota Territory to white settlement; he did so on October 15th of that year with orders to take all Indian provisions and stores away from any tribe or village he came across while doing so. The town was founded on October 22nd of that year by Captain James Sibley as a trading post on an old Sioux trail between Great Falls and Sioux City, Iowa
