Mandan was founded in 1876 by Norwegian immigrants. The town population peaked at 2,500 in the early 1900s, but declined as a result of farm abandonment and natural disasters. In the 1920s, Mandan developed into an agricultural processing center and began to experience growth again. By the late 1940s, Mandan had reached its current size with over 10,000 residents. The town experienced a period of rapid growth during the 1960s and 1970s as a result of new highway construction and rural development. Since the 1990s, Mandan has seen a slowdown in population growth due to declining economic opportunities and increased competition from other nearby towns.
