In 1870–71 Wm Pugh started a gristmill south of central town near what is now the high school building and store today (). In 1881 Pugh sold his interest to Leland Lawhorn who built the first home in what is now downtownMandan around 1886 (). Lawhorn also started a grocery store which continued into the early 1900s when groceries became available only through mail order service (). After Lawhorn's death in 1902 his widow added an additional floor to her home which still occupies this space today (). Leland Lawhorn's son NellieLawhorn operated a bakery next door to her house from 1906 until she died in 1971 (); after her death that business passed to her daughter AliceEmmons who ran it until 1990 (). In 1916 Roy Boehm started packing plants at their mill which produced artificial gasoline for cars (); these operations stopped permanently when he lost his patent in 1935 (. Today many buildings original to early Mandan are still standing including my grandfather's old gristmill).Lester Groszman designed and built Center High School (now Mitchell High School) about 1912 for students from nearby Aberdeen; it opened its doors about 1928(). Other schools built during this time include Central High School (1928), Prairie View A&M University (1930), South Dakota State Normal and Agricultural Institute (1935), Dakota Wesleyan College (1945), and Haskell blacksmith shop/workshop located east of town off US Highway 16 about 1945 ().Today much of downtownMandan has been removed except for some remaining historic buildings like Lester Groszman's old gristmill or Center High School while most other businesses have moved out leaving only a few original buildings standing such as Roy Boehm's packing plants or Yellowstone Drug Co., Inc.'s location where they still sell milk today
