The today's Mandan, ND is a place where people from all over the world come to farm and live. The area that now makes up the town of Mandan was first settled by the Sioux in 1868. The town began as a small trading post between traders and the Sioux. By 1907, Mandan had a population of 350 residents. In 1916, the United States Congress established Fort Laramie as the military base for Indian Affairs in North Dakota and then renamed Mandan after it. Mandan has had its share of changes throughout its history. When it was founded, Mandan was part of an all-Indian reservation known as Pine Ridge which stretched from South Dakota to Nebraska. In 1890, when white men started ranching in what is now North Dakota, they took over much of what remained of Pine Ridge and designated it as their own landowning community called Dineenville which means "place where horses are pastured." This event helped create what is now known as Fargo-Dineenville County on the eastern edge of present day North Dakota. In 1907, when gold started being discovered in this area, many people came to gamble and prospect for gold near present day Bad Axe Lake in central North Dakota. These miners spurred development around Bad Axe Lake because they provided jobs for local people who built roads and other infrastructure necessary for running businesses at that time. The influx of new settlers also led to increased trade with neighboring countries because goods coming into America through Canada were cheaper than going downriver through Minnesota or Wisconsin due to tariffs then in place. As more people moved into this area during World War I (1914-18), government restrictions on alcohol production led to organized crime taking hold in downtown Omaha while entrepreneurs developed new businesses such as hotels, restaurants, flour mills and lumberyards along Highway 18W which runs through town center today - one of only a few surviving examples remaining from that time period! Today’sMandan is home to many different cultures: Lakota (Sioux), Cheyenne (Arapaho/Cherokee), Hidatsa (Chippewa), Arapaho/Cherokee/Northern Oglala Sioux (Oglala Sioux) and Kiowa/Apache).
