In the 1870s, North Dakota was a sparsely populated and land-poor region. The area had been settled by Plains Indians before European explorers arrived in the early 1800s. At that time, the Sioux tribe controlled much of what is now North Dakota. To protect their territory, the Sioux developed strong alliances with other tribes. One such alliance was with the Mandan tribe. The Mandan people were a powerful and influential tribe living in present-day Mandan, North Dakota. They were known for their hunting skills and for their ability to trade goods with other tribes. The Mandan people also had strong military traditions and enjoyed wielding power over their fellow Tribes. In 1868, some traders from Norway traveled through North Dakota and came across the Sioux Tribe at Camp Nelson on the Missouri River. At that time, it was one of the most important trading points on the Great Lakes due to its location near water resources and its strategic position between Canada and Russia. The traders decided to stay at Camp Nelson for a few weeks before continuing their journey eastward along the riverbank towards Minnesota Territory. While they were there, they met two Native American men named George Armstrong Custer and Buffalo Bill Cody who would later become famous as America’s first rodeo cowboy (1896). On July 6th, 1868, some Native American warriors led by Custer attacked a detachment of Ulysses S Grant’s troops stationed at Fort Nebrasky in present-day Omaha County, Nebraska. After almost being massacred, only about 50 men managed to escape alive into Indian Territory (now South Dakota) where they contacted members ofthe Mandan Tribe who helped them find refuge among the Lakota people living in South Dakota Territory. Mandan is a city in Morton County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 7,975 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Morton County and the county seat of Morton County. The metropolitan area has a population of 17,569. Mandan was established in 1881 when commissioners from Dickinson and Fargo square off to decide which town would become the new county seat for Morton County after Iowa became a state. The original name for the town was "Fargo," but it quickly became apparent that this name had no real meaning since there were no Fargo Indians living in Mandan at that time. So commissioners decided to change the name to "Mandan" after a Sioux chief who had been killed near present day Fargo while trying to escape American Indian captivity during the Minnesota War of 1812.
