In 1945, when Japan surrendered unconditionally at Hiroshima, much celebration took place throughout North Dakota as well as around the world due to this event. The town's population had increased significantly by this time so it decided to move into new housing developments that were being constructed at that time near Highway 1 outside Fargo. However, by 1951 most of these developments had been demolished due to changing landscape conditions and growing population density within downtownMandan itself continued to grow slowly until it reached its current level today with over 20 thousand residents spread out over six neighborhoods within downtownMandan proper alone has almost doubled its population since 2002! Today there are many cultural attractions located within downtown Mandan including several museums including one devoted exclusively to Native American art called "The Cultural Heritage Museum."
