The area that now makes up Cass County was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Mandan. By 1800, there were over 20 villages located around present-day Mandan and Wahpeton counties. A treaty signed between the Sioux nation and US forces on September 26, 1794 ceded all of present-day Cass County to America. In 1876, gold seekers discovered gold nearpresent-day Cassville; this led to increased settlement around this area and new names such as Wahpeton (meaning “gleaming”) and Mandan (meaning “the great landowner”). In 1907, when Cassville became a city under newly established North Dakota laws following statehood, leaders decided that the community's name should be changed from "Mandan" to "Cassville". This change reflected growing recognition of Cassville as a center for education and business opportunities within North Dakota than as a traditional Sioux Village. Cassville experienced several era of growth during its brief history as a city: It grew rapidly during World War I due to military requirements for munitions production; it continued expanding after World War II with an influx of civilian workers from Minnesota; and it reached its peak during the 1960s with an increase in population attributable primarily to oil exploration activities . However, since 2000 cassVILLE have suffered significant declines both demographically and economically – most notably through declining enrollment rates among high school students and reductions in nightlife activity .
The first European to visit the area now known as North Dakota was French explorer Pierre-Jean de La Salle in 1681. He named the area for George Mandan, one of his friends and fellow explorers. The Dutch fur trader Hendrik Barentsz established a trading post at Zuidoost in 1813, which served as the nucleus of what would become the Dakota Territory. In 1846, Sioux Chief Crazy Horse led an attack on a white settlement near present-day Rapid City. The resulting Battle of Fort Laramie resulted in the death of scores of settlers and Kiowa and Cheyenne warriors. The territory was organized into United States Territories following the Mexican–American War (1848).
