These traders discovered oil shale deposits near present-day Fargo and began exploring these deposits for potential exploitation. In 1824, Herman Steenbeck became interested in this oil shale deposit and established himself at an old Indian village southeast of Fargo called Spirit Lake . From here he leased land bordering Spirit Lake for $1 per acre . On July 1st , 1830 , Steenbeck sold this lease to Norwegian immigrant Ole Jensen for $25 per acre . This transaction marked history because it marks when Norway became part of United States . 2) When Denmark ceded its claims to North Dakota after World War II , they left behind many artifacts that are currently exhibited at Fort Snelling National Military Park northeast of Minneapolis On November 16th 1861 , United States Congress passed an act entitled "An Act To Establish A Territorial Government Over All Tribes And Other Frontier Settlements Within The Limits Of This Union" which created Mount Rushmore National Monument northwestof Aberdeen
