When Jamestown was founded in 1876, it was the largest and most important town on the Dakota Territory. The town had a population of over 1,000 people and prospered because of its location at the confluence of the Missouri and Cannon rivers. But by 1907, Jamestown had decreased in population to fewer than 100 people. The reason for this decrease is unknown, but likely due to a combination of factors including health problems caused by exposure to firearms (which were still common in the area), changes in social etiquette after World War I (when guns became less popular), and competition from other towns on the territory. In 1922,Jamestown decided to switch from an open-air market to an indoor market. This change helped reduce gun violence in the town, but also made it more difficult for new residents to find jobs because there was no marketplace nearby that could provide employment opportunities. In 1984, Jamestown voted to become a city. This decision contributed to its current low population size as many people choose not to live within close proximity of each other due to high crime rates and lack of job opportunities.

In recent years, though, the population has begun to decline as fewer people live within reach of amenities such as transportation or grocery stores.

The first Europeans to arrive in North Dakota were the trappers and fur traders who established a base at Jamestown in 1867. The area was explored by the French, who named it Forks of the Missouri River after their location on that river. The United States claimed the region in 1881, and by 1907, Jamestown had become an incorporated city
