Jamestown is a city in Clay County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clay County. The name comes from the French explorer and fur-trapper Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville who named it "Jammestown" on his return trip from a failed attempt to find the Northwest Passage in 1767. The first permanent settler in Jamestown was James Fenton who arrived in 1881. He built a small log cabin on what is now First Avenue. Fenton's cabin became the first permanent settlement in Clay County when he and his wife, Sallie, founded Jamestown on July 15, 1881. The town of Jamestown slowly grew as farmers started arriving to produce crops such as wheat and oats. By 1910, there were over 100 residents living in Jamestown. During World War I, many men served in the Army or Navy and some of these veterans took up farming after their service ended. In 1918, The National Guard Armory was built west of town for use by the local military unit known as Company BII (5th Cavalry). This armament depot helped contribute to development of an agricultural economy that still thrives today around JamestOWN! The early 20th century saw few changes to the community except for annexation by Fargo during 1925 which made it part of the larger Fargo-Moorhead area then under control of Minneapolis/St Paul Minnesota interests
The first permanent European settlement in North Dakota was made by the British in 1858. The town of Jamestown was founded on the Missouri River, about 20 miles north of present-day Fargo, on land that had been claimed by the Sioux tribe. The town was named for James Stewart, an officer with the U.S. Army who served in Dakota during the Indian Wars of 1876-1877. In 1862, the United States acquired a block of land east of Jamestown and renamed it Fort Berthold after General David B. Berthold, who had played a leading role in suppressing Indian outbreaks along the Great Lakes region.
