He convinced his family and friends to come west and start a new life on what would become Jamestown – a small community located on Hudson Bay that would be dedicated to commerce, exploration, education, and Christian values. The first settlers arrived at Jamestown in 1875 aboard HMS Discovery when it reached North Dakota Territory on July 15th that year searching for goldfields located near present day Fargo/Moorhead. Eight days later they landed their boats at Fort Snelling and started trading goods with natives before setting out into the great Plains adventure which would last six months . On October 10th they came across another group offinding gold fields northwest of present day Fargo/Moorhead . Captain James McLaughlin had named these areas “Honeymoon” because only men could prospect thereon as it was not considered safe for women or children due to Indian attacks . The original intention of developing these fields was probably not realized as no gold was found until 1898 when prospectors discovered quartz veins offshore . By then however many settler families had moved away from Honeymoon due to lack of good farmland or bad weather conditions . With no other viable option available local farmers took up agriculture starting crops such as corn , beans , potatoes , soybeans etc .. beginning around 1915 when oil wells were drilled nearby

The town of Jamestown grew up around the trading post that was established in 1851 by Captain John McLaughlin and his wife Catharine. The post was later renamed Fort Snelling after Major General Snelling who commanded American forces during World War I. The fort served as a military depot until it burned in 1923. In 1934, Fort Snelling was again renamed for Colonel James Wahlstrom who served in World War II as commanding officer of First Cavalry Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division. The first post office in Jamestown was established on October 8, 1867. The first town meeting was held on November 5, 1867. The name of the town was changed from Fargo to Jamestown on December 1, 1867. The flour mill and sawmill were built in 1897. The population of Jamestown reached a peak of 2,500 in 1920 but declined to 1,700 by 1930.
