When they arrived at Jamestown, they found that it was already inhabited by Native Americans. The Englishmen decided that this place would be their best chance for success because it was unoccupied and there wasn't much competition for land in the area. In 1619, Governor Thomas Dongan issued a charter to build a public house and town square at Jamestown. This helped make JamestOWN one of the most important towns in North America because it allowed for development and growth within its boundaries. Over time, other settlements were also built aroundJamestown- including Fort Williams (1624), West Point (1639), Easton (1648), and Yorktown (1781). These settlements helped improve life for all involved by providing goods and services such as agriculture, trade, transportation, military defense, etc..
