In the early 1800s, Jamestown was a small trading post and settlement in North Dakota. At its peak, Jamestown had around 50 residents and operated a bakery, millinery shop, and grocery store. However, the post ceased to operate due to economic problems in the 1830s. The first European sighting of what is now North Dakota occurred in 1670 when Spaniards sailing under Admiral Alonso de Mercado spotted land on the river's bank.
