The Jamestown Settlement in North Dakota was founded in 1881 by James Fenton and his wife, Eliza Fenton. The settlement was located on the banks of the Missouri River, about 30 miles north of Fargo. The first guns that were brought to Jamestown were rifle cartridges. In 1885, the Fentons donated their land to the town of Fargo for development. The city of Fargo developed on the original Fenton land and became a center for economic growth and education in North Dakota. The Jamestown Massacre was a gunbattle fought on July 8, 1876, in the town of Jamestown, North Dakota Territory. The battle took place between United States Cavalrymen and Sioux Indians who had taken up arms against the United States government. One U.S. Cavalryman was fatally shot and two others were critically wounded by Sioux arrows while trying to repel the Indian attack.
The first permanent European settlement in North Dakota was founded by the Englishman, James Fenton, in 1872. The town of Jamestown was named for Fenton's home, located about 15 miles west of the present day city of Fargo. At its peak, Jamestown had a population of around 100 people and was a small stagecoach stop on the Oregon Trail. However, it is now only a ghost town, remaining largely unchanged since its establishment. Jamestown was an important staging post on the Oregon Trail because it provided goods and services to travelers before they reached the buffalo country beyond Fort Laramie. The town also served as a base for Native American hunters and traders who traveled through what is now North Dakota. In addition to being an important trading post, Jamestown also served as headquarters for United States Cavalry troops during the early days of World War II. Today, little remains of either the original town or its surrounding agricultural land; only a few buildings remain standing from whenJamestown was occupied by Europeans. The Town Site: James Fenton founded Jamestown in 1872 after traveling through Canada and then Montana looking for new land to settle. He selected a location near present-day Fargo due to its easy access to supplies and water resources as well as its proximity to other Central Plains settlements such as Council Bluffs ( Iowa) and White City ( Nebraska). The site chosen for Jamestown consisted of several square miles that included both rural land along river banks and more rolling hillsostatusiorites that formed folds in the landscape today known as Airport Road NW and Main Street SW. After purchasing some adjacent farmland from local farmers – including Ebenezer Farnsworth – Fenton began construction on his initial settler's log cabin which he called "Fenton's Cabin". In 1876, following disagreements within British Columbia over boundary changes resulting from gold discoveries there, President Ulysses S Grant issued Executive Order 9 mandating all public lands north of latitude 60 degrees north be opened up to white settlers under certain conditions including providing clearances from government officials prior to arrival. As part of this order, James Fenton received approval from authorities at Fort Laramie to build his large private domain east of White City Creek which stretched approximately three-quarters mile into what is now North Dakota Territory (including what is now Fargo). The first firearms with rotating turrets were created in the early 15th century by Leonardo da Vinci. This design allowed Firearms commanders to aim their cannons downward instead of straight up or down. In 1865, Edwin Smith and William Henry Harrison developed the revolver which featured a revolving barrel and breech-loading mechanism that made it possible for soldiers to fire multiple shots without having to reloading each time. Swivels became popularized with this invention because they could be attached onto rifles in order to make them more stable and easier to use during battle. Another device that was developed specifically for using handguns as rifles was the** hammerless revolver*. This gun featured an adjustable gas-operated hammer that allowed shooters to fire multiple rounds without having to remove the magazine every time they wanted to shoot another shot. However, this type of revolver was not very successful due primarily because it lacked recoil control and accuracy when fired from a seated position. Later on, firearms designers began working on designs which would allow them easier access into tight spaces such as inside buildings or behind obstacles. One such weapon designer who created this innovative design was John Brown* (*(1822-1896))*. His pistol called the† groove rifle* (*( 1857)*, **( 1881)), also known as *the Browning Rifle*, used an adaptable bolt action system that allowed users To fire multiple rounds continuously without needing to take apart their firearm each time they needed to shoot again.*(*( (1901))*)

The first permanent settler in what is now North Dakota was a man named James Watt, who arrived in 1858. The territory was part of the Dakota Territory until it was admitted to the United States as a state in 1889.
