The area now known as Jamestown was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to visit the area was French explorer Jean-Baptiste La Salle in 1764, and he named it "New France." From there, English explorers and traders began visiting the region, and in 1849, a group of Mormons led by Brigham Young began traveling through the area. In 1851, they founded what is now called Salt Lake City on the Missouri River. In 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee visited Jamestown while on his way to fight against Union troops at Antietam Battlefield. After his victory over Union forces at that battle, he traveled south to cross the Potomac River into Maryland. There he met President Abraham Lincoln and made an offer for military support against Confederate forces in Virginia. Lincoln accepted this offer and sent General Ulysses S. Grant to lead Operation Anaconda – a massive invasion of northern Virginia – which successfully crushed Confederate forces at Monterrey Gap near Manassas Junction. After the war ended, many Americans decided to move westward into Oregon Territory under President James K. Polk's administration because of new opportunities for agriculture and mining in that territory. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Jamestown were Irish immigrants who arrived during the Gold Rush era of Californiauringo 1849-1852; however, no permanent structures were erected until after Indian Removal Act of 1830 had removed most of the indigenous people from their lands east of Iowa state line (present day North Dakota). The town originally consisted only of a few log cabins located along Clearwater Creek near present day Interstate 80; these cabins became known as "the Fords" because they were occupied by farmers who rented them out for summer use when not working on their farms or grazing their animals near Fort Garry National Monument adjacent to Clearwater Creek reservoir (today's North Dakota State Capitol Building). In 1870-71, major improvements were made to Sawmill Gulch Road leading from Clearwater Creek Reservoir eastward towards Jamestown; this road became known as Main Street after its completion. First white women ventured into what is today North Dakota during early 19th century when missionaries organized baptisms among Lakota Sioux Indians living along Platte River valley floor below Yankton Mission School where some 240 converts baptized between 1850s-1860s according to Jerald Crouch’s “History Of The Sioux People: A Narrative With Documents” which provides: “On [May] 14th [1865], Rev[ercy] W[illiam] Hargrave baptized sixty female converts…from agency stations between mouthof Platte river valley below Yankton mission school …northwest corner of present day Larimer County….the site selected by Capt[ain John Chivington] commanding Expedition overland from Stroudsburg Landing thence up stream about 12 miles” Although there are no documentary evidence showing any European contact with native people within present day North Dakota prior thereto contemporaneous with establishment ofJamestown settlement itself within same geographical boundaries - contemporary natives & local historians generally agree that initial encounters/contact between aboriginal peoples & Europeans took place primarily via aerial reconnaissance& scouting operations conducted mainly by Hudson Bay Company personnel operating from fur trading post(s) located approximately 2 ½ miles north northeast corner edge then southeast side

Jamestown, North Dakota was founded on December 3, 1871 by the United States government as an official outpost of the newly created United States of America. The town was named for James Bowie, founder and first American settler in what is now North Dakota.
