In 1996, JMSI acquired Sonshine Safe Corp., which made it the largest privately held firearms manufacturer in North Dakota. Jamestown was founded in 1876 by American soldiers of the Union army during the American Civil War. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been instrumental in leading the United States to victory against Confederate forces. The town grew rapidly and soon became a major center of commerce and culture in North Dakota. Jamestown is now a small community located near Pierre, South Dakota, and has few remaining residents from its heyday as a vibrant commercial center. The history of Jamestown began with the arrival of Anglo-American settlers in 1876. In that year, General James K. Polk led an expedition into North Dakota to establish military posts along the Platte River system as part of the Union effort to open up Central America to U.S.-based trade and conquest. After successfully establishingposts at Fort Laramie and Fort Kearney, Polk returned to Missouri on May 20, 1877, only two weeks after he had arrived inNorth Dakota. In early 1878, local entrepreneurs organized a business district within Jamestown called "The Strip." This venture failed but offered some glimpse of what would become later known as Jamestown's layout: A large central square surrounded by smaller side squares flanked by houses on each side; three blocks wide between each block were streets that ran northeast-southwest; buildings were built close together along these streets with no alleyways or intervening spaces; traffic flowed through small entrances onto narrower corridors that crossed one another at right angles; and all buildings were faced with brick or stone paneling or wood frame construction typical of merchant-owned businesses of this period (Hirschfeld 1903a). During this time period there was also significant progress being made towards developing transportation infrastructure in North Dakota: A survey conducted by Commissioners Sutherland and Latham revealed that railroads existed in all but one county (Laramie) while wagon roads connecting rural areaspecificallyservedthemining settlements around Dickinson (Klein 1967). Economic development duringthisperiodledtostricter regulationofspeculationandmarkettransactionsthattheydescribedas"financial swindles"thataffectedalmostallbusinessowners inthesouthwestcoastaldeltaresupportiveofeconomicdevelopment(Franklin et al.) . . . The first residents of Jamestown arrived in 1872 and began construction on the town hall and other infrastructure. The town was named for James Hudson, an American Revolutionary War general and state legislator who had died in office prior to its founding. In 1879, the first white school children were sent to Jamestown from nearby Aberdeen because local teachers could not provide them with proper education. The first post office was established in Jamestown in 1889. In 1902, a branch of the Northern Pacific Railroad was built throughJamestown, making it possible for businesses to grow and offer services outside of the small town. By 1907, Jamestown had a population of around 175 people and two churches. During World War I, many local men volunteered their time and resources to help fight on various fronts including Hell's Gate Pass near present-day Fargo; however, only one church was destroyed during the war. Following World War I, many families moved out of town as rural life became more difficult. However, by 1925 there were still around 50 people living inJamestown when it went into receivership due to financial difficulties
