The Jamestown Bicentennial Celebration began on July 4, 1988 and ended on October 6,1988. The event was celebrated to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown by the British colonists in 1718. At that time, it was the first permanent English settlement in North Dakota. One of the main attractions for visitors to Jamestown were its guns and munitions. Many cannons from England were brought over during the Revolutionary War and used by the settlers. After America Declaration of Independence, many British military officers abandoned their posts in North Dakota and fled to Canada or Nova Scotia. However, some British soldiers who had remained behind built a small arsenal at Jamestown to continue using cannonade against American forces during the war. In 1892, a company called "Jamestown Riflemen" was formed at Jamestown with orders to keep firearms and ammunition available for local residents until ordered by authorities to surrender all arms. The group continued operating until 1927 when it disbanded due to lack of funding. In 1933, another group called "Cowboys" was organized at nearby Fargo with similar orders; however, these groups did not remain active for long as well because they lacked popular support among locals or government officials. In 1936, a new rifle company called "North Dakota Rifles" was organized at Jamestown with similar orders but never completed due to financial reasons; this also marked the end of gun ownership within town limits. In 1941-1942 two clubs called "Mountain Men" were also formed at various locations throughout town; however these clubs did not last very long either as well because most people did not want their names associated with such an event which being considered too risque for young adults today). The Jamestown Historic District is a national historic district located in Jamestown, North Dakota. As a result of its history, current visitors can experience firsthand how government functioned during early American history while exploring this important cultural landmark.
