The first ammunition ever fired in Jamestown, North Dakota was a shot from an artillery piece called the Cannon. When relations between Britain and Spain deteriorated following Napoleonic Wars (1814-1815), Britain decided not to continue allowing Spain control over any part of North America north of Mexico City; instead, it created a unified America under its own leadership with Texas as its first state (Nebraska would be added two years later). Although many English colonists desired independence from Great Britain, few wanted to live among Native Americans who were already struggling through centuries-long conflict with these newcomers. One reason for this divide may have been that some Englishmen saw native people as savages who needed no education or civilized treatment; while others found indigenous people intriguing because they looked like them—a unique mix that had never before been seen in North America. In 1862, the Dakota Territory was created from parts of Minnesota and North Dakota. The territory extended from the Missouri River to the Arctic Ocean. In 1868, the US Congress passed a bill creating the Sioux Nation as a result of their hostilities with the United States over land claims in New Mexico and Arizona. The Sioux were not originally scheduled to receive citizenship in the new nation, but they eventually did so.
