Grand Forks, North Dakota is a city in Grand Forks County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grand Forks County. The first European to visit what is now Grand Forks was Captain James Clark Ross on July 8, 1819 when he and a group of boats arrived from Missouri River via the rapids of the Missouri River at Fort Benton. On October 15, 1867, gold was discovered along the banks of the McKenzie River by prospectors John Dennison and James Baughman. The men decided to name their discovery "Fort Benton." A post office called "Benton" was established in 1865, but it became abandoned in 1870 because there were no settlers living there. On November 29, 1886, President Grover Cleveland signed into law an act creating Grand Forks Township with a population of 575 people and making it part of Cass County. The township had been created as part of a larger effort to encourage settlement around Cass County's rich mineral resources.
