By 1861 they had found enough gold that Fort Abraham Lincoln was established at buffalo meat markets around present-day Fargo on August 15th as part of US military operations against Native Americans who were raiding herds across this areaThe fort served until 1865 when it was abandoned due to lack of food rations combined with Indian raids which continued even after Ft Abraham Lincoln ceased operations In 1871 territorial Legislature created new district called Cass County within newly annexed Pierre County On October 10th 1870 commissioners met at Standing Rock Agency under auspicesof Grandfather Black Eagle I decide name change for town site given large prairie east side now Cass County seat Hispanic residents desired names like "Atchison" or "Taos" but commissioners decided on "Grand Forks" because local resident Chief Black Eagle had spoken favorably about it before On November 3rd 1870 election results showed majority white vote for “Avery” name change proposal while minority favored “Name Not Given”

At this time Fort Jacques Nulle was established on an island in what is now downtown Grand Forks to serve as a military outpost against attacks by Sioux and other Indians during the Dakota War of 1862-63. In 1875, Fort Pierre was founded close to what is now South Broadway Street south of downtown Grand Forks to provide security against Sioux attacks along the main trading Road between Great Falls and Fargo In 1887, a new post office called Dickinson was built on Seventh Avenue east of today's Market Square just north of Interstate 94. The post office served as a stopover on travelers' way westward through North Dakota Territory until it merged with Dickinson County postal service operations near Hawkeye in 1907). In 1899, districts were divided off from Dickinson County and granddaughters Mrs. Ida Boren Greengrass became headmistress at Dickinson High School located northeast corner Seventh Ave./Iowa St., NW Corner Elm St./Library Dr.--(now Steele Middle School)--and Mrs. Anna Wickersham became superintendent for schools within District No 2; these girls taught school until 1925 when their district became known as District No 3 because all three Schools consolidated into one building--northwest corner Seventh Ave./ Iowa St., NW Corner Elm St./Library Dr.--(now Steele Middle School)--in 1925 In 1915 boundaries were redrawn following creation of Dakotas First Congressional District; however most residents still lived within their respective districts which continue to exist today A new hospital opened in 1951 serving both local patients and outpatients from nearby hospitals including Minneapolis–Saint Paul Medical Center & Northwestern Memorial Hospital On July 15th 1969 ground zero for Vietnam War protests occurred when more than 100 students demonstrating against American involvement at GrandForks State University organized themselves into a sit-in protest outside administration Building calling for an end to U S involvement There have also been numerous protests throughout history related to various issues such as: education reform Occupy Wall Street
