Grand Forks is a city in North Dakota, United States. The population was 137,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grand Forks County. The city lies on the banks of the Missouri River, which forms its eastern edge. Grand Forks is surrounded by Bighorn Mountains to the south and east; Mount Rushmore National Monument to the north; and Cannon Lake to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grand Forks were fur traders led by Pierre Dorion in 1804-1805. A trading post and Roman Catholic mission was established here in 1827 by Father Louis Riel. In 1881, Fargo became Grand Forks' second incorporated town when it was detached from Grande Prairie and annexed as part of that city's growth. The name "Fargo" originated with a Sioux War party that camped near this site in 1851 during their pursuit of Crazy Horse after he had escaped from Fort Leavenworth military prison near Topeka, Kansas. In 1903, Fargo built an oil refinery on land it donated for that purpose and named it Refinery Park in honor of its founder, Jepson Hennigood Refinery Company president John Prentice Gossage (1847-1912). That same year saw also Grand Rapids become an incorporated town adjacent to Fargo due to annexation by that city's landowning families following a request made by City Council member Isaac Noren (1861-1929). Gossage Boulevard runs through both cities today as a tribute to him and his legacy. In 1916, Fargo annexed Steele County which lying immediately northeast of present day Grand Forks along Highway 828 formed part of that city's growing suburban area until 1959 when it became an independent county under former mayor Jesse Helms (1915-2005). During World War II local businesses produced munitions for the war effort including manufacturing ammunition drums for General Motors plants at Hammelburg and Richfield outside Minneapolis; airplane parts at Wirtz Air Force Base northwest of Fargo; gasoline tanks for Army training exercises at ND Range Airport northeast of Moorhead; rubber tires for Army use at Love Field southeast of Sioux Falls; kerosene lamps for electric power generation at ND Power Administration Plant northeast of Moose Jaw during wartime production shortages caused by lackof coal supplies . . . also truckloads arrived daily from Duluth Minnesota loaded with lumber straw bale slabs ready for shipment into Great Britain where they were turned into wooden crates ready for export back home
