In 1916, when World War I broke out, Grand Forks became one of only two U S cities that sent troops into battle (the other being Oklahoma City). After the war ended, many downtown businesses closed due to Reconstruction policies which favored white business owners over African American entrepreneurs who had fought in World War I. However things changed during prohibition when several businesses open up providing employment for local men who formerly worked for breweries or mining operations; this new industry helped contribute to growth within downtown Grand Forks during this time period During the 1920s through 1940s there was significant growth within downtown Grand Forks attributable largely to three factors: 1) influxes of military personnel stationed at Fort Morton due to World War II; 2) development of heavy industrial plants along Interstate 94 near downtown; and 3) demand from farmers for goods bought back by producers during prohibition limitations During the 1960s through 1980s there was little real growth taking place within downtown excepting a few small storefront conversions which led directly into related businesses lining Main Street including restaurants (Fenway's), hotels (The Plaza), convenience stores (Eddie Bauer), lumberyards (Chevron Lumber), dry-goods stores (Jenny's Jars), health clubs/spas (Pampered Patient Spa), office buildings (Lawrence Allyn & Sons law firm building) and several large box stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart Supercenter etc.. In 1990 major redevelopment began with job creation associated with mall developer Lovett Properties Incorporated spearheaded by mayor Jack Goodnight following approval from state regulators . This involved demolition of most older buildings along Main Street utilizing traditional brick veneer techniques with exposed concrete ribs giving each structure a unique look which has continued until today .Many portions of Downtown remain unchanged since then although recent architecture changes have included high rise condos/townhomes along Center Boulevard known as “Downtown Living”
