Rockefeller who first established himself in Sioux City, Iowa in 1871 as a banker and landowner. He returned to Fargo in 1881 after purchasing 640 acres (250 hectares) of land there from the Gros Ventres Sioux Tribe for $1 million dollars U.S$. The town site was surveyed by cattle buyer George Aiken and Native American agent Frederick Bison and named after its founder-in-chief: "Fargo Mines", meaning "rich gold fields". In 1907 railroads arrived in North Dakota Territory - one being the Minneapolis & St Paul Railway which served as the town's primary artery until 1915 when an alignment running east-west through Fargo was completed making it possible for truck farming to take off which led to increased development around downtown including construction of dams along river channels that redirected water away from streams local farmers used to irrigate their crops; today these same channels are still visible with accompanying homesites just upstream from where they once flanked busy intersections now known as Riverside Drive NW and Park Boulevard NW near Interstate 94 exit # 21A (exit 6 south). Fargo's growth continued during World War II with several factories built within sight or reach of downtown including Wernher Hoeffer Aircraft Factory (now part of Boeing), General Motors' Kearny Proving Ground (later Chrysler Plant), Ford Motor Company's Willowbrook Laboratory, National Broadcasting Corporation's Radio City studios etc.; many small businesses flourished during this time too such as convenience stores/gas stations/comercials like Woolworths which had opened up next door to what is now Macy’s Department Store prior to that store’s merger into JCPenney two years later; African Americans also immigrated during this time starting out working odd jobs like domestics for white families before transitioning into more formalized roles such as sales clerks at large department stores or becoming night workers at hotels notables like Jesse Owens attended rallies wearing buttonhole collars protesting discrimination against black Americans throughout much of America even though he had no legal right to do so due to his race but nevertheless spoke out against segregated buses traveling interstate highways all while living among white people despite obstacles constantly thrown their way including police brutality incidents targeting both black customers and employees alike particularly towards women day laborers earning lower wages than men while men could buy cars without ever having registration tags inserted into them early 20th century Fargo included few integrated neighborhoods until well into 1960s when increasing diversity led refugees fleeing across state lines seeking safety over open weed fields instigated violence resulting in mass arrests often leaving neighborhoods predominately African American essentially resegregating their communities while assimilating some members reducing overall populations significantly percentagewise
