In 1865, when Minnesota joined the United States, Fargo became its capital; however, during Reconstruction (1868-1871), it reverted back to Winnipeg until 1870 when it became Minneapolis' new capital following General James Hinton's victory over Confederate forces at Battle of Gettysburg. The city's growth continued into the 20th century; beginning in 1924 it experienced one of the largest waves of real estate development in American history as farmers moved into newly developed areas such as Southtowne and West Side Flats east of Interstate 94 near Interstate 29/Uptown Boulevard (now Old National Road). This migration created dense concentrations of people near transportation hubs such as intersections I-94 and Uptown Boulevard/Old National Road and led to construction around these areas including streetscapes that are still visible today - examples include Elm Street between I-94 Exit 16B/Uptown Boulevard/Old National Road and Elm Street east of I-294 exit 17A/Southtowne Drive; Uptown Boulevard between Elk Corridor Drive and Interstate 94 exit 12C/Windermere Avenue; Park Avenue east of I-294 exit 15A/Lakewood Drive; Kippenberger Avenue north of Broadway Blvd./I-[State] Highway 509 interchange

The first post office in Fargo was established in 1882, and the city's first store opened in 1886. In 1911, the National Cash Register Company built a factory in Fargo and began to produce automated cash registers which revolutionized business activity. The company went public with its IPO on May 25, 1912, and the stock price reached $2 per share within two weeks of release. The company continued to grow rapidly through its early years, but it faced competition from more innovative companies such as IBM and Sears Roebuck which bought out the National Cash Register Company in 1923 and 1924 respectively. By 1930, Fargo had grown to its current size of over 100,000 residents with over 20 businesses employing over 400 people. The population decreased slightly during World War II due to the war effort, but resumed growth following the end of hostilities. During this time, Fargo experienced high-level economic prosperity thanks to its proximity to Minneapolis/St Paul and numerous manufacturing jobs that were available due to new technological advances such as plastics production. However, starting around 2000s development has slowed down significantly as oil prices increased which has led to falling real estate values and shrinking job opportunities
