The racial makeup of the city was 48% Native American,[6][7][8][9] 43% White,[10] 2% African American,[11][12][13][14], 3% Asian,[15][16], 1% Pacific Islander,[17], and 1% from two or more races.[18] Hispanic or Latino residents made up 9%,[19] 6%,[20][21] 5%, and 4%. As one may expect given its size and location within Dakota Territory during much of its history—farther east than most other U S cities—Fargo saw very little white settlement until after World War II when many African Americans moved into Fargo from surrounding states such as Minnesota due to job opportunities available here following America’s victory over Nazi Germany
