In 1865, Fargo Mayor George Hildebrandt petitioned Congress for permission to rename it "Fargo" because of its growing importance as a transportation junction between eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota; however no action was taken at that time or any subsequent period due largely to objections by eastern Dakotans who saw NoDAPL (the building of the Keystone XL Pipeline) as affecting their town adversely. In 1870 three men—George Wohlgemuth, Augustus Herrmann & August Strand— Traveling salesman came across claims about goldfields east of present day Fargo on lands they called "Platinum Mines". These men started mining operations which produced over $1 million worth of gold within two years! A new post office was established at Fargo on October 1st 1870 under name “Prairie du Chien” but soon renamed “Fargo” due to local opposition from Eastern Dakotans who felt their town would be harmed if it got its own name different than those given thereto by other municipalities such as Yorkville/Hutchinson (York County), Devils Lake (Kootenai County), etc.. By 1945 there were only three liquor stores remaining within downtown; however since then several other businesses have opened up along Decatur Street. In 1941, during World War II, Fargo was one of over 100 cities across America that responded to an emergency call for volunteers for military service; this mobilization helped lead to more jobs for local boys and girls than ever before. One of the most famous natives of Fargo during this time was Willy Loman who played Mr. Chips on television's "The Ford Show". The movie set also took place in downtown Fargo between University Avenue and Seventh Street from 1951-1957 inclusive. After World War II ended, increased traffic (due largely to oil drilling) led to problems with Sidewalk Boulevard becoming too narrow for cars much larger than taxicabs or pickups trucks; consequently two lanes were added leading from I-94 southbound towards downtown until 1984 when these lanes were closed permanently due to construction projects associated with Interstate 94 expansion eastward into north Minneapolis/St Paul County! This caused gridlock within downtown which resulted in decreased business activity as people had no choice but move uptown or out of town altogether! In 1978 a group of young women decided they wanted their own community within walking distance of their high school campuses - so they founded it called “The City’s New Girls”; their goal was To create safe havens where girls could explore careers outside their homes while still living close enough together that they could support each other financially without feeling like outsiders or second class citizens
