The city was founded by Danish settlers in 1881 on land that had been surrendered to them by Native Americans following a military engagement at Red Cloudyeidekki (now Cannon Ball), about 20 miles Northeast of present-day Fargo. The first post office was established in 1882 and named "Fargo" after early settler Ole Abel Fargo. Dakota Territory was organized into states on November 2, 1889, with Fargo chosen as its capital. The first governor of North Dakota, John Hoeven, served from 1893 until his death in 1907; he had been elected twice as mayor of Fargo but never as governor because he objected to presidential nominations made by President Grover Cleveland. In 1902, when Oklahoma became a US state and then granted tax breaks to oil producers within its borders, Fargo quickly became one of the most important cities in this new state economy. At that time it also became home to world's largest Progressivism movement conference which took place there called "The General Strike Conference." In 1912 Fargo elected Mayor Swede Eriksen who led it through some very difficult times such as World War I and Prohibition; he also spearheaded efforts to annex Nokomis County (southwest) which would eventually become the city's secondlargest suburb outside downtown Fargo proper during World War II due to increased industrial activity around those areas outside of downtown Minneapolis/St Paul). When World War II started both Minnesota and Nebraska seceded from the US; however Nordbooks Inc., owner of much larger paper mill near Grand Forks declined an offer from local authorities to buy out their interests so that all three mills could be closed down together – this event helped create what is now eastern Deming Township within Saskatoon-Guildford Municipality adjacent east side Deming Street between 3rd Avenue South & 4th Avenue South). After 1945 numerous small businesses were swallowed up by large Sino-American corporations with names like Rexall Drug Company or Nabisco Brands while downtown Randolph Business District developed into one of North Dakota’s more vibrant commercial districts characterized by high-rise office buildings dating back tothe 1920s along Kasper Drive NW including Hearst Paper Building completed 1925 just south across 3rd Avenue South from present day First National Bank building housing several department store anchor tenants such as Sears Roebuck & Co.; JCPenney; Macy’s Department Store before becoming known today simply as “First National” – ground zero for major mall development beginning around 1950 with Normandale Mall opening 1963 followed by Woolworths Park Plaza opened 1974 followed finally by CenturyLink Fieldhouseopened 2000 bringing muchneeded economicDevelopment Downtown while still remaining residential areas containing significantresidential homes built prior thereto through various stages: single family detached homes built pre-1950typically contain 5+ bedrooms married attached housesto serve multiple familiesCurrent plans are for multiple levelsof retail development (including hotel/motel occupancy) surrounding largeNFL stadium redevelopment project currently under construction
Fargo was founded in 1881 by John A. Fargo and James H. Granger as a small town on the Missouri River. The town grew quickly, and by 1890 it had become an important trading center for the region. In 1907, Fargo became the seat of government for Dakota Territory after its creation from parts of Minnesota and Iowa. The city continued to grow during World War II, becoming one of the most heavily bombed cities in the world with over 60% of its buildings destroyed or damaged by bombing. In 1959, Fargo was renamed to honor Henrietta Lacks, who had helped discover human cervical cancer.
