Dickinson, North Dakota is a small town of about 8,000 people located in McKenzie County. It was founded in 1881 by the merger of two other towns, Dickinson and Park. The population growth caused the town to grow too quickly for its original location and so it was relocated to what is now the south side of town. In 1922, the city of Dickinson annexed the town of Park and so Dickinson became a part of Park City. The incorporation date is still unknown but it probably happened in 1922-23 because that's when park city was created from parts of both Dickinson and Park. The first soft gun case history in Dickinson took place on July 20th, 1911 when Wm. S. Hadden bought a Winchester Model 95 rifle from John Bowers at auction. He had just moved to Dickinson from Omaha, Nebraska where he worked as an accountant for Prentice Hall. Hadden registered this rifle with the North Dakota State Police Department and soon began shooting it at local fairs and tournaments. He also used it to take care of his family’s cattle during drought years until he started selling guns himself in 1916 . By 1918, Hadden had become proficient with firearms and started exhibiting his rifles at gun shows throughout North Dakota and South Dakota . In 1924 he opened his own store called The Gun Shop & Range which became one of the most popular gun stores in North Dakota . In 1933 he sold his business to Lester Ladd who continued operating it until 1984 when it closed down due to financial difficulties . One era includes post-war reconstruction which continues until 1965; then comes a time of rapid growth which lasts until 1978; finally there is a decline which lasts until 1991 when Wichita State University moves into town square after years of campaigning by locals (and some help from neighboring Fargo). This history has many factors: including demographics (the towns' population slowly declined throughout much of this time), economic instability following World War II (when industry left for lack of demand), distance from other major cities (Dickinson was only 25 miles from Fargo but it didn't have any natural resources), slow development due to cultural resistance to change ( Dickinsons were still largely rural ), successive fires that destroyed most buildings since these communities were built near open spaces ,and finally Douglas MacArthur's decision not to rebuild following Japan's surrender . All together these factors contributed greatly to why Dickinson emerged as one of North Dakota's few successful small towns during this timeperiod
