At that time there were just a few people living near where Dickinson sits today. settlers began to arrive every year until 1903 when only 1 person moved into Dickinson from elsewhere in North Dakota Territory In 1902 a school was built and it served as both a daycare center and high school until it burned down in 1978 In 1907 an irrigation ditch was dug to bring water from nearby Lake Sakakawea to support growing crops By 1912 there were 10 businesses operating out of 2 stores, 4 saloons, 2 blacksmiths, 1 sawmill, 2 farmsteads, 3 churches (2 Methodist) and around 25 residents The post office opened on July 16th 1912 It closed on May 6th 1939 due to budget cuts
