In 1940, post office operator Averill Harriman donated land for a new post office which opened in 1941 adjacent to Harriman Park just east of town limits on Utopia Drive today known as Richardson Boulevard (the original name). During World War II, over 1 million Americans served within the military or were directly related to service through their families; many residents also worked outside of home providing essential goods and services to their community during wartime. The civic spirit that emerged during these difficult times was unparalleled anywhere else during that time period and continues to be strong today with events like Independence Day fireworks shows throughout downtown every July 4th weekend! In 1951 local resident Edith Rankin organized one of America's first Women's Philanthropic Associations with support from Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt - women had not yet gained full equality with men at that point! This organization provided financial assistance for needy women across America including helping those affected by famine in India & China etcetera thru grants & donations from its members/staff).
