The town began to grow rapidly when a railway was completed through it in 1886. The post office was established in 1889, and became the first stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1907, Dickinson became an incorporated city with its own mayor and councilors. In 1940, it merged with neighboring Kearney to form Kearney-Dickinson-Kearney Borough. The town has experienced various industrial changes over its history - including steel production during World War II; agriculture during peacetime; and construction of highways and other infrastructure during recent decades. One change that has not occurred as often is an increase in population - due to moving away from towns when their industries declined or because residents have moved into larger communities outside of Dickinson proper

The town was founded in 1881 by John Dickson and named for General George Dickenson, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Dickinson on February 17, 1881. The name of the town changed to Dickinson on May 9, 1886 when it became part of Grand Forks County. The first store in Dickinson was a grocery store run by J.W. Smith and his sons Eli and Jesse from October 1888 until 1893 when it burned down. A flour mill operated in Dickinson from 1904 until 1907 when it closed due to World War I regulations that required all businesses with more than $5,000 worth of sales to close their doors for two years. Because Dickinson is located along Interstate 29 which skirts the edge of Mount Rushmore National Monument and because its location makes it an easy access point for tourists visiting the monument, it has become a popular tourist destination over recent years. On July 10, 2000, a fire destroyed most of downtown Dickinson while leaving only one building standing which still functions as a business center today called "The Olde Mill". In 2009–10 local officials began discussions about creating an economic development corridor stretching from east side of Interstate 29 into western end of Mount Rushmore National Monument throughtowns such as Palmer City and Wallaceburg before ending at Prescott Valley near Yuma Proving Ground; this would create new jobs within defined boundaries and support growth within existing communities.. In December 2016 NDOT announced plans to rebuild Interstate 29 between Keystone and Ramsey after multiple storms damaged bridges during winter 2017/2018
