After studying law at the University of Freiburg, Bismarck began his political career as an aide to Otto von Bismarck, then minister of finance and justice. In 1849, he became secretary general for propaganda and information in the government of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. From this position, he developed a powerful reputation as an able leader and propagandist. In 1871, Bismarack became president of Germany's Free State of Nordhausen (later East Prussia). Here he showed himself to be an effective leader who could handle difficult problems. He also gained favor with Emperor Franz Josef I by making several successful public speeches denouncing royal autocracy and supporting democracy. This helped him win election as president in 1870 and again in 1874. During his presidency, Bismarcker made many important changes to German society; these included abolishing serfdom; developing railways; implementing social welfare programs; increasing education opportunities for women; introducing daylight saving time; and forming alliances with other countries during World War I (1892-1895). In 1895-1896, he signed the Treaty Of Tilsit which ended World War I on European soil. Afterward, he retired from politics but continued to live quietly until his death in 1898 at age 86 years old.
