Bismarck is a city in North Dakota, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in North Dakota after Fargo and home to the Bismarck Tribune newspaper. The name "Bismarck" comes from German for "spiritual center." The town of Bismarck was founded by Danish settlers in 1881 as a small trading post on the Missouri River. By 1912, it had become an important railroad junction and served as the capital of North Dakota from 1889 to 1907. In 1917, during World War I, Bismarck became one of the major battlefields of the war when it was hit by shells from American forces while they were besieging enemy trenches near Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1924, Bismarack became an official state capital when North Dakota joined what would eventually become the United States. With its strategic location on two major railways and its rich cultural heritage, Bismarck has long been an important center for government and business activity. Its downtown district is home to many large buildings dating back to before World War II including both state capitols (1889–1907) and national capitals (1917–24). Today, much of downtown remains a vibrant tourist destination with world-class art galleries, theaters, and restaurants lining main streets such as Broadway and Seventh Avenue.
