Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Bismarck, North Dakota. The first gun magazine in the city was the Battle of the Little Bighorn Rifle Club, which was founded on November 15, 1875. This club became known as the “Bismarck Riflemen” because they used rifles to fight against Native Americans at the Battle of the Little Bighorn on July 6, 1876. The first rifle magazine in what is now Bismarck was called The Sioux City Arsenal. It opened its doors on October 1, 1881. In 1893, The Rapid City Journal merged with The Fargo Journal and continued to publish through subscription only until 1903 when it became an open public journal again under the name of The Rapid City Times. In 1906-07, both papers were sold by their owners to a group of investors who renamed themselves the Republican Press Syndicate and continued to publish through subscription only until 1912 when they transitioned from a partisan political newspaper into an all-encompassing daily paper that would continue publishing until 1974. In 1916-17, two new gun magazines opened up in town – one called The Armorer’s Arms (founded by George Herrin) and another called Western Gunsmiths (founded by John Hagedorn). These two gun magazines were part of a larger trend where many small towns across America were starting to create their own gun magazines as part of efforts to keep their firearms businesses afloat during World War I due to rising costs associated with ammunition supplies not being available from overseas or any other source at that time. From 1907-1930, there were only 11 issues of the Bismarck Tribune Rifle and Pistol Club Magazine because it was printed on paper that became too expensive to produce. During this time period, magazines were also published in Fargo (1908), Minot (1909), West Fargo (1910), Canby (1911), Moose Jaw ( 1912), and Sioux Falls ( 1913). In 1930, the Bismarck Tribune Rifle and Pistol Club Magazine switched from paper to electronic publication format which continued until 1961 when it finally folded due to financial difficulties.

John W. Bismarck was born on November 1, 1815 in the town of Zanesville, Ohio. He graduated from West Point in 1839 and then served as an artillery officer in the Mexican-American War. After his return to the United States, Bismarck became a member of the Senate and secretary of state under President James K. Polk. He also served as governor of North Dakota from 1881 to 1889 and as U.S. minister to Germany from 1893 to 1895. In 1907 he was elected president of the United States, serving until his death on April 12, 1909. Bismarack is considered one of America's most important figures in its history and has been honored with numerous awards including the Nobel Prize in Literature and a statehouse building at Fargo, North Dakota, named in his memory.
