During World War II, Winston Salem was among the earliest communities to join the war effort by making contributions such as supplying materials for ammunition production or providing services such as electric power generation or water distribution to soldiers stationed nearby at Fort Bragg or Camp Lejeune on Cape Hatteras Island (now just off shore from Wilmington). The city also erected important wartime infrastructure such as large munitions factories which produced more than 1 million pieces of artillery ammunition per day during World War II alone!
