Winston Salem is a small town located in the County of Wakefield, North Carolina. The community was founded in 1868 by George Selvin and his family. Winston Salem has been home to a variety of businesses and organizations over the years, including the Winston Salem Lions Club, Winston-Salem School District, and North Carolina State University. The Selvin family's legacy can be found in many aspects of their community, including their ownership of the original grocery store in town. In 1978, the Selvins donated land toNC State University for its then new Student Union building. Today, NC State University's Student Union building is one of the most iconic buildings in Winston Salem. The building was designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson and features a variety of artesonations that include an IMAX theater and a gymnasium. In 1984, the Winston Salem Chamber Orchestra was formed and continues to play at various venues around town today.
