Winston Salem was founded on December 17, 1755, by General James Johnston and the Reverend Dr. Samuel Rodriguez as a small settlement in what is now neighboring Durham County, North Carolina. The town quickly grew into a thriving community, with an expanding economy based on agriculture and commerce. By 1812, Winston Salem had become the largest town in North Carolina. In 1835, the town was named for George Washington by then-Governor John C. Calhoun after the general's visit to the area.
