In 1865, General John B. Hood ordered the relocation of all Confederate forces from Wilson County to Knoxville, Tennessee. Wilson was one of the counties evacuated and its citizens were forced to abandon their firearms in order to avoid detection by Union forces. The lack of firearms in this county caused many farmers to become criminals or bandits who robbed and killed Union soldiers and civilians. As a result, the rifle club at White Sands School was formed in 1872 to promote shooting for fun and sport. The first state championship target shoot took place in 1888 and the club continued sponsoring tournaments until 1924 when it disbanded due to financial conditions. The next year, the North Carolina Rifle Association (NCRA) was founded with a goal of promoting shooting sports statewide. In 1928, NCRA organized a state championships at Asheville Armory where local rifle clubs met together to compete against each other. Over time, more and more clubs joined NCRA including White Sands School which became an affiliate in 1932. This period sawWilson become known as one of the most gun-friendly communities in North Carolina because so many people enjoyed participating in shooting tournaments and events that took place there every year. Between 1934 and 1978, almost 500 individual matches were held at White Sands School with over 150 participants - making it one of the most popular venues for target shooting throughout North Carolina! Since then, White Sands has been hosting regular NRA sanctioned events which attract top shooters from around the country as well as locals who love getting involved in some friendly competition!
